Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling uses a composite resin material to replace decay in one or more teeth. If left untreated, decay can continue to compromise a tooth until a full root canal is needed. A filling is placed to put a stop to the decay and save the overall integrity and structure of the tooth. Fillings can last for years before needing to be replaced with new material.

Why would you need a Dental Filling?

You may want or need a dental filling because you have a cavity. During the procedure, the decay is removed from a tooth and replaced with a filling. You may need to have a filling placed if you have a crack or small fracture on a tooth or if you have deep cusps and grooves that make it difficult to keep the area clean. We can determine if a filling is necessary with the help of dental x-rays and an exam.

What are the benefits of having a Dental Filling?

The first and most important part of having a filling placed is that it involves removing the underlying decay. A cavity, or dental decay, can compromise a tooth and eventually affect the inner pulp where the nerves and blood supply to the tooth are located. The second benefit is that a filling is meant to improve the strength and integrity of the tooth, keeping it strong and preventing the need for additional restorative work. Fillings are long-lasting and durable, and they can be used for patients of all ages.

What is the procedure like for a Dental Filling?

You will have the area numbed to make the filling procedure more comfortable for you. The decay is removed from the tooth using both a high and slow speed drill. Once the decay has been completely removed from the teeth, the hole is prepped for the tooth. Resin material is poured and smoothed inside of the hole. The material is then cured with a blue curing light, which keeps it securely in place. You can expect your new filling to last for many years and provide you with a healthy, natural-looking tooth.
