Inlays and Onlays

What are Onlays and Inlays?

An onlay or inlay is a type of restoration that completely restores functionality and structure to a particular tooth. You can think of an inlay or onlay as middle ground between a filling and a complete dental crown. These restorations are made to mimic the feel and look of real, natural teeth. They are incredibly durable and can last for up to 30 years with good maintenance and hygiene.

Why would you need Onlays and Inlays?

You may need an inlay or onlay if a tooth has broken, cracked or has a large cavity or existing filling in it. The restoration sits either inside of the tooth cusps (inlay) or across the entire top crown of the tooth (onlay). The restorations are more durable than fillings, so they’re a great alternative to composite resin or amalgam that you may already have. The procedure is done quickly, easily and comfortably in our office, so you can benefit from having a beautiful smile in a short period of time.

What are the benefits of Onlays and Inlays?

One of the most prominent benefits of an inlay or onlay is their durability and strength. These restorations last longer than most fillings and even some dental crowns. They are made using high-quality materials that mimic the look of natural teeth. Because they are custom-made for each patient, you can expect a comfortable, even fit.

What can you expect with the procedure for Onlays and Inlays?

To begin treatment, you’ll need to come in and have the tooth prepared for the inlay or onlay. Impressions are taken and sent to a local lab where the restoration is made for you. The restoration is then sent back to our office where you’ll come in to have it placed. Medical-grade cement is used to adhere the inlay or only onto your tooth. The bite is adjusted so that it is more comfortable for you. You can leave the office with a gorgeous smile that will last for years.
